Huxley believed that factors such as “society’s inherent weaknesses, over-organization, mass propagandization, mass mind-manoeuvring” are “the enslavement of man”, as they destroy his individuality, his unique mentality and his freedom” (Farag). and hypnotic suggestions, Huxley shifts his emphasis to Bernard Marx.
The people who lead the most content lives are those who blindly accept their fate, but this same lack of diversity in thinking does not bode well for the development of society, nor does it protect the individual from becoming a slave to the World Leaders. Whether or not stopping is good or bad, the Brave New World mirrors the world view. “Man seeks his happiness and stability at the expense of his freedom” (Farag).
#BERNARD MARX BRAVE NEW WORLD FREE#
Bernard is unable to be content with his dull life in the same way that Watson longs for more, revealing that social stability teeters carefully the willingness of potential free thinkers to accept their engineered lives. Perhaps more so than through people in lower castes and outsiders such as John the Savage, a better indicator of the significance of free will comes from those who do not need to utilise it to thrive. They are plagued by their discontentment as a result. Although it is true that they live luxurious lives and that they have been conditioned to believe they are living in an ideal society, Huxley uses divergent thinking Alphas such as Bernard Marx and Helmholtz Watson to inspire his readers to examine whether it is even possible to truly live the ‘ideal’ life if happiness relies on relinquishing free will. However, this same reasoning therefore incites the question of why more Betas, Alphas and Alpha+ do not act against their prescribed roles in the World State. It seems to be given that the satisfaction of the lower castes is maintained through conditioning and low IQ, because why would you question the fairness of your role in society if you simply do not possess the intellectual capacity for thinking beyond your conditioning? After all, “The secret of happiness and virtue liking what you’ve got to do” (Brave New World). Hypnopaedia, Soma, tampering with fetal development and the caste system enormously impact the individual’s belief that they have free will, when in reality their subconscious mind is working against them to hold them captive. In Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World (1932), the citizens of the World State have been led to believe that they possess free will, contrary to the meticulous conditioning that they experience throughout their lives. The main objective of my study is based on the literary analysis of two novels: Aldous Huxleys Brave New World in relation to George Orwells Nineteen.
